You can't build a moat around a model
80% of startups may already be running downloadable Chinese weights
Some vocabulary first, because this argument is buried in jargon.
An open-weights model is one whose parameters — the numbers that make it work — you can download and run on your own machines. No API key, no permission, no per-request bill. A closed model like the ones from OpenAI or Anthropic can only be reached through their servers.
Ben Werdmuller's argument this week is that the open approach is winning, and that American labs are defending something they don't actually own. His reasoning: a model has no real moat. It isn't a network of users that gets more valuable as more people join. Someone else trains something comparable and your advantage becomes brand loyalty.
The comment thread underneath was more interesting than the post. Nobody there disagreed about direction. They disagreed about speed. One person argued cheap hardware will match today's best models in ten to fifteen years. Another said ten to fifteen months, pointing at a model called Qwen 3.6 that already runs on a laptop and scores above a leading model from last year on a public capability index.
And a good counter-argument: running your own model is free the way a puppy is free. Someone has to keep it fed. Companies pay for support and reliability, not just capability.
What we can learn: if choosing a model is becoming a reversible decision, then the durable work is everywhere else — your data, your way of testing whether the thing is actually right, and how quickly you could swap.
How much of your AI strategy assumes today's model is still the right one in a year?
